My piece "Thread That Pulls Too Tight" is part of Beyond Borders II, a group exhibition on view now at The Art Center at Johns Creek through October 17, 2026. Curated by Althea Foster, the show brings artists together to explore culture, identity, and community.
The piece draws on memories of Dominican hair care — the pressure to straighten or manage natural hair into what's considered "presentable," and the belief, absorbed early, that hair has to be "good hair." It's framed by bobos, the elastic hair ties with plastic balls so many of us grew up with.
This story also made the front cover of Appen Media's print edition — the first time my work has made the front page of a physical newspaper.
